How ConveyThis works on Joomla

ConveyThis for Joomla is a free extension you install from the Joomla administrator with Install from Web, or by uploading the package file. It supports Joomla 4, 5 and 6 on PHP 8.1 or newer. After installing, open Components → ConveyThis, paste your API key and confirm the languages you chose in your account.

Each language is served from its own path, such as /es/about, so Use URL Rewriting has to be switched on in Global Configuration. Pages are translated automatically, without creating a copy of each article per language, and you edit the results under My Translations or in the visual editor.

Integrate ConveyThis with your Joomla by following these simple steps:

Create ConveyThis Account

Create a ConveyThis account here. Your ConveyThis account dashboard lets you view and manage all your translations.

Configure Your Integration

Select Joomla as your website technology. Enter your domain name and indicate the languages you want to translate your website into. Click "Next" to proceed through the setup steps.

Install ConveyThis Extension

Go to your Joomla control panel > System > Extensions and search for "ConveyThis". Install the extension, then go to Components > ConveyThis. Paste your API key, select source and target languages, and click "Save Configuration". Follow detailed setup guide.

Enable URL Rewriting

Enable "URL Rewriting" in System > Global Configuration to avoid 404 errors. Rename htaccess.txt to .htaccess (Apache/Litespeed) or web.config.txt to web.config (IIS). Visit your website to see the language switcher appear.

Joomla translation extension: common questions

Which Joomla and PHP versions are supported?

The extension works on Joomla 4, 5 and 6 with PHP 8.1 or newer. Joomla 3 is not supported, so a Joomla 3 site needs to be upgraded before you install it.

Can I use it together with Joomla's Language Filter and associations?

No, pick one. Joomla's own multilingual setup relies on the System - Language Filter plugin plus a separate, manually translated article for each language, linked through Multilingual Associations. The Language Filter puts the same language prefixes in the URL (/es/) that ConveyThis uses, so the two conflict. When ConveyThis finds the filter enabled, it offers to turn it off for you.

Why do my translated Joomla pages return a 404 error?

Usually because URL rewriting is off. Go to System → Global Configuration, set Use URL Rewriting to Yes in the SEO section and save. On Apache or LiteSpeed also rename htaccess.txt to .htaccess in the Joomla root; on IIS rename web.config.txt to web.config; on NGINX the server itself needs configuring. The Joomla setup guide lists each case.

Install from Web is not available on my site. How else can I install it?

Download conveythis.zip from the link in our Joomla setup guide, then go to System → Install → Extensions, open the Upload Package File tab and drop the file there. Once Joomla reports that the package installed successfully, continue under Components → ConveyThis exactly as with the web install.

Where do I change languages, the switcher and the wording?

Languages and the switcher design (under Widget style) are managed on the ConveyThis screen inside Joomla. To correct a translation, open My Translations in your ConveyThis dashboard or use the visual editor to edit text directly on your pages, and add brand names to the glossary so they are never translated.
