ConveyThis vs Shopify Translate & Adapt: the short answer

If you run one Shopify store in a few languages, start with Translate & Adapt. It is free and made by Shopify, it works inside your admin and theme editor, and it translates products, collections, pages, navigation and SEO fields automatically for a limited number of languages. Many merchants never need more than that.

ConveyThis is the better choice once translation becomes ongoing work that several people take part in. That usually happens for one of five reasons: you need more automatically translated languages than Shopify's app covers; brand and product names keep being translated when they should not be; people outside your Shopify staff (an agency, freelance translators, a reviewer in each market) need to edit translations; you already paid for translations and have them as CSV or TMX files; or you run other websites besides the store and want one tool for all of them.

ConveyThis is only free on a small plan, and every ConveyThis plan caps both translated words and monthly page loads. Translate & Adapt has neither cost, and a Shopify merchant should weigh that first.

Sources: the Translate & Adapt App Store listing, Shopify Help Center pages on the Translate & Adapt app and on localization and translation, and conveythis.com/pricing, all read on 28 September 2026. Where Shopify's two pages disagree, we show both.

The language count: two, or eight?

For a Shopify merchant deciding whether the free app is enough, this number matters most, and Shopify's own pages did not agree when we checked them.

The App Store listing says: "Translate & Adapt lets you auto-translate up to two languages for free, and manually add as many translations as you wish." The Help Center says: "You can use AI translations from Shopify to automatically translate your store's content into up to 8 languages, in addition to your store's default language," and adds that when all 8 are in use, automatic translation is not available for any other language, so you "add them manually, or use a third-party translation app."

The Help Center page is the more detailed and the more recently maintained of the two, so it is probably the current rule, but we cannot confirm that from outside a store. The app itself shows how many of your automatic-translation languages you have used, so open it before you decide. Either way, what you need to know is how many languages you want translated automatically. If that fits inside what your app shows, the free app covers you on this point.

Pricing: free against a monthly plan

A paid plan cannot be cheaper than a free app. The table shows what each ConveyThis plan gives a Shopify store, so you can see what you would be paying for if you need it.

Your storeTranslate & AdaptConveyThis (per month)
Small catalog, 1 extra languageFree, automaticFree plan if under 5,000 words and 2,500 page loads; otherwise Starter, $12 (30,000 words, 15,000 page loads)
Mid-size store, 3 languagesFree, automaticBusiness, $24 (100,000 words, 50,000 page loads)
Store in 9 languagesFree, but automatic only up to the app's limit; the rest by hand or with another appPro+, $110 (700,000 words, 9 languages, 350,000 page loads)
Large catalog in 14 languagesFree, same limit on automatic languagesOptimum, $160 (1,000,000 words, 14 languages, 500,000 page loads)

For the first two rows, ConveyThis costs money that Translate & Adapt does not. You would pay it only for the workflow tools described below. In the last two rows, the comparison is really between ConveyThis and translating the extra languages by hand, or between ConveyThis and another paid third-party app. Yearly billing on ConveyThis is ten times the monthly price. A busy store should also check the page-load column: ConveyThis counts monthly translation requests (page loads) on every plan, and Translate & Adapt lists no traffic limit.

How we scored them

Every comparison on this site uses the same five weighted criteria, published on our comparison methodology page. Scores are out of five; the weighted total is the sum of score × weight. Where Shopify does not describe a feature on the pages we read, we score only what it does publish.

Criterion (weight)ConveyThisTranslate & AdaptWhy
Website deployment (30%)45Translate & Adapt is part of Shopify: install it, pick languages in Settings, and translate from the admin or theme editor. ConveyThis installs as a Shopify app in minutes, but it is still a second system to set up alongside Shopify's own language settings.
Localization workflow (25%)43Translate & Adapt has a side-by-side editor, weekly Auto-sync and market-specific content. ConveyThis adds glossary rules, translation memory, a visual editor on the live store, team roles and CSV/TMX import.
Multilingual SEO (20%)45Both give each language its own URL with automatic hreflang. Shopify also puts every published language in the sitemap and lets you translate URL handles natively; ConveyThis's pricing page does not list translated URL slugs, which costs it the point.
Cost model (15%)35A free app with no listed word or traffic limit is hard to beat. ConveyThis has a free plan and a transparent ladder, but it caps words, languages and monthly page loads.
Governance (10%)43ConveyThis offers team roles for people who are not Shopify staff and an enterprise tier. Translate & Adapt uses your Shopify staff accounts; its pages do not describe translation-specific roles or review steps.
Weighted total3.854.304×0.30 + 4×0.25 + 4×0.20 + 3×0.15 + 4×0.10 against 5×0.30 + 3×0.25 + 5×0.20 + 5×0.15 + 3×0.10.

Translate & Adapt scores higher, and for a typical Shopify store that is the right result. ConveyThis scores higher only on workflow and governance. If those are why you are reading this page, give them more weight and redo the sum with the scores in the table.

Where Translate & Adapt is the better choice

Stay with Shopify's app, or install it first, if one of these applies to you:

  • You sell in a few languages and machine translation reads well enough. Free automatic translation for the languages the app covers is the best deal on this page.
  • You adapt content for each market as well as each language. Translate & Adapt can show different wording to shoppers in markets that share a language, such as British and American English, or run a promotion in one market only. ConveyThis does not list market-specific content as a feature.
  • You want everything inside Shopify. Translations live in your store, your staff edit them in the admin and Shopify supports the app, so you have no second login and no second bill.
  • Your store is very busy. Translate & Adapt lists no traffic limit. ConveyThis counts monthly page loads on every plan (15,000 on Starter, 50,000 on Business), so a high-traffic store can need a larger plan than its word count alone would suggest.
  • You want Shopify to manage translated URL handles. Shopify lets you translate product and page handles (except the word "products" in the path).

Where ConveyThis is the better choice

  • You need more automatic languages than Shopify's app covers. Shopify's Help Center itself points merchants to third-party apps once its automatic-translation languages are used up. ConveyThis plans include automatic translation in 3 to 100 languages.
  • Brand and product names keep getting translated. Glossary rules tell ConveyThis to leave a term alone, or to always translate it one way, on every page and in every language. The Shopify pages we read do not describe a glossary for Translate & Adapt.
  • You fix the same phrase again and again. ConveyThis's translation memory reuses your edits wherever the same sentence appears, so a correction made once on a product page carries to the next product.
  • Your translators and reviewers are not Shopify staff. ConveyThis team roles let an agency or a freelance translator edit translations without an account in your store admin.
  • You want to edit on the storefront itself. The ConveyThis visual editor opens your live store in each language, so you see a translation in its real layout before you change it.
  • You already paid for translations. ConveyThis imports CSV and TMX files on every plan, including Free, so you can reuse your existing human translations.
  • The store is not your only website. A Shopify store, a WordPress blog and a Webflow landing site can share one ConveyThis account, one glossary and one set of translators.

The rows come from each vendor's public pages on 28 September 2026. "Not described" means we could not find the feature on Shopify's own pages, which does not prove the feature is missing. If you rely on it, check inside your admin before you decide.

Moving from Translate & Adapt to ConveyThis

If you decide to switch, keep the language URLs Google already knows.

  1. Write down your current language URLs. Note whether your languages are on subfolders (example.com/fr) or subdomains (fr.example.com), and whether you translated URL handles.
  2. Export the translations you edited by hand. Shopify's Help Center describes managing translations with CSV files. You may need to reshape the columns before importing them into ConveyThis under Translation Management → CSV/TMX.
  3. Install the ConveyThis Shopify app, choose the same languages and let it translate the store.
  4. Add glossary rules for brand names, product names and terms that must never change.
  5. Check the main pages in each language (the home page, a product, a collection and the cart) in a private window, and add 301 redirects for any old translated handle that changes.

The Shopify integration guide covers installation, and the CSV/TMX import help article covers file formats.

Frequently asked questions

Is Shopify Translate & Adapt free?

Yes. The Shopify App Store lists Translate & Adapt as a free app made by Shopify. Automatic translation by Shopify is included for a limited number of languages, and you can add manual translations for as many languages as your store publishes. ConveyThis has a free plan (5,000 words, one language, 2,500 page loads a month) and paid plans from $12 a month.

How many languages can Translate & Adapt translate automatically?

Shopify's two public pages disagreed when we checked on 28 September 2026. The App Store listing says the app auto-translates up to two languages for free. Shopify's Help Center says AI translations from Shopify cover up to 8 languages in addition to your store's default language, and that for more than 8 you add translations manually or use a third-party app. Check the counter inside the app, which shows how many of your automatic-translation languages you have used.

Does Translate & Adapt have a glossary or translation memory?

Neither the App Store listing nor the Help Center pages we read describe a glossary or translation memory. The app has a side-by-side editor, manual translation, weekly Auto-sync and market-specific content. ConveyThis includes glossary rules, translation memory, a visual editor on the live store and team roles.

Is Translate & Adapt good for SEO?

Yes. Shopify's Help Center says language URLs can use subfolders or subdomains, hreflang tags are added automatically, and all published languages are included in the sitemap. URL handles can be translated, although the word "products" in the path cannot. ConveyThis also serves each language on its own URL with automatic hreflang and translated meta tags.

Should I switch from Translate & Adapt to ConveyThis?

Only if you have hit a real limit: more automatically translated languages than Shopify's app covers, brand terms that keep getting mistranslated, outside translators who need their own access, or translations you already paid for in CSV or TMX files. If none of those apply, Translate & Adapt costs nothing and there is no reason to change.
