Shopify store translation: common questions

Does ConveyThis translate the Shopify checkout?

Shopify runs the checkout on its own pages, so checkout text is translated through Shopify itself: add the language under Settings → Languages, then fill the "Checkout and system" tab under Online Store → Edit default theme content → Localize, and publish. ConveyThis translates the storefront around it — products, collections, pages, theme text and text shown by other apps. How do I install it: the Shopify app or a code snippet?

Most stores use the app: in Shopify admin open Apps, search the Shopify App Store for "ConveyThis", install it, sign in or create an account, pick your store language and the languages to add, then click Activate, Save in the theme editor and Check activation. If you prefer, you can paste the ConveyThis snippet into theme.liquid under Online Store → Edit code instead.

Should I use Shopify Translate & Adapt or ConveyThis?

Translate & Adapt is Shopify's own app and is a reasonable start when you add one or two languages to mostly native Shopify content. ConveyThis translates what shoppers actually see, including text rendered by review, upsell and bundle apps, and adds a visual editor, glossary, translation memory and team roles for larger catalogs. Can my Shopify store use /fr/ or fr. language URLs?

Shopify stores cannot be served through a path-based proxy, so the sub-directory option (example.com/fr/) is not offered for Shopify. You can use sub-domains instead (fr.yourstore.com, one CNAME record per language) on the Business plan or higher, and ConveyThis adds hreflang tags for each language. Are Shopify order confirmation emails translated?

Not automatically: emails are sent by Shopify, outside your storefront. You can still send each customer the email in the language they ordered in by adding a short Liquid block to each template under Settings → Notifications. The email notification guide includes the code to copy.
